Frequently Asked Questions
IBCLC Lactation & Infant Feeding Support
What is an IBCLC?
An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is a healthcare professional who has completed specialist education, clinical practice requirements and an internationally recognised examination in lactation and infant feeding.
As an IBCLC, I offer evidence-based, compassionate and individualised support to families throughout their feeding journeys.
When should I see an IBCLC?
You can seek support at any stage of your feeding journey, whether you're pregnant, have recently welcomed your baby or have been feeding for several months.
Some common reasons families contact me include:
Painful breastfeeding or difficulty latching
Concerns about milk supply
Slow weight gain or concerns about milk transfer
Suspected tongue-tie
Breast refusal or fussiness at the breast
Expressing, pumping or introducing bottles
Combination feeding
Returning to work while breastfeeding
Weaning from breastfeeding
You don't need to wait until feeding becomes difficult. Sometimes a little reassurance and guidance can make all the difference.
Can you help if breastfeeding is painful?
Absolutely. Breastfeeding shouldn't be something you have to endure through pain.
During our consultation, we can explore positioning, attachment, your baby's oral function and other possible reasons for discomfort.
Together, we will work towards making feeding more comfortable while ensuring your baby is feeding effectively.
Can you assess my baby for tongue-tie?
Yes. As an IBCLC, I can carry out a detailed feeding assessment, including observing your baby's latch, feeding behaviour, tongue movement and oral function.
Not every feeding difficulty is caused by tongue-tie, so it is important to look at the whole feeding picture.
If I suspect a tongue restriction may be affecting feeding, I can discuss the findings with you and help arrange an appropriate referral for further assessment.
I do not perform tongue-tie divisions myself, but I can offer feeding support before and after the procedure if required.
Can you help if I think I have a low milk supply?
Yes. Concerns about milk supply are one of the most common reasons parents seek breastfeeding support.
We will explore your baby's feeding patterns, weight history, milk transfer and any factors that may be influencing milk production.
I can help you develop a realistic, individualised feeding plan that supports your goals and your baby's nutritional needs.
Can you help if my baby prefers a bottle or refuses the breast?
Yes. Breast refusal, bottle preference and changes in feeding behaviour can be upsetting and confusing.
We can explore possible reasons for your baby's behaviour and work gently towards your feeding goals.
There is no pressure or expectation. We will work at a pace that feels comfortable for you and your baby.
Do you support combination feeding and formula feeding?
Of course.
Every family has different circumstances, experiences and feeding goals. My role is not to tell you how you should feed your baby, but to provide informed, non-judgemental support.
Whether you are breastfeeding, expressing, combination feeding or formula feeding, you deserve compassionate care and reliable information.
What happens during an IBCLC home consultation?
Our consultation is a relaxed and thorough opportunity to explore your feeding concerns in the comfort of your own home.
We will discuss your pregnancy and birth experience, your baby's feeding history, any challenges you have experienced and what you would like to achieve.
Where appropriate, I may assess your baby's oral function, observe a feed, explore positioning and attachment, and assess feeding effectiveness.
Together, we will develop a personalised plan with practical suggestions and clear next steps.
There is always time for questions, and your comfort and consent are central to the consultation.
Should I feed my baby before you arrive?
There is no need to keep your baby hungry or delay a feed before my arrival.
If possible, it can be helpful to observe a feed during our time together, but we will always follow your baby's needs.
Can you help me prepare for breastfeeding during pregnancy?
Absolutely. Antenatal feeding preparation can be a wonderful way to build confidence before your baby arrives.
We can explore how breastfeeding works, recognising feeding cues, positioning and attachment, establishing milk supply and what to expect during those early days.
We can also discuss any previous feeding experiences, concerns or questions you may have.
What if I had a difficult breastfeeding experience with my previous baby?
Previous feeding difficulties can leave parents feeling anxious about feeding another baby.
I offer a gentle, sensitive space to explore your previous experience, understand what may have happened and prepare for a different journey if that is your wish.
Your feelings, choices and experiences will always be respected.
